A New Method in Environmental History
Over several months in 2014–15, Shane DuBay (PhD candidate, Evolutionary Biology, UChicago) and Carl Fuldner (PhD candidate, Art History, UChicago) photographed complete sets of select bird species in the Field Museum’s extensive study collections, which include specimens spread over the last 130 years. Based on these photographs, they devised a novel means of tracking industrial pollution in the Great Lakes region, which involved analyzing luminance data from within the images to gauge the relative amount of soot covering each bird. Read more

For 2nd Chicago Architecture Biennial, the Arts, Science + Culture Initiative Commissions Sculpture By Artist and Alumnus Dan Peterman
The Arts, Science + Culture Initiative at UChicago presents Slipping and Jamming: Variable Installation of Z-Forms, by Chicago-based artist Dan Peterman. Commissioned for the 2nd Chicago Architecture Biennial, Slipping and Jamming is a sculptural installation that explores the tension between structural stability and instability. Read more

Tyshawn Sorey Trio to Perform at Logan Center as Part of Experimental Music Series
On Thursday, November 8, the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago will host the Tyshawn Sorey Trio. The performance, the first act of the 2018-2019 Experimental Music Series, will feature 2017 MacArthur Fellow Tyshawn Sorey, a virtuosic multi-instrumentalist and composer, as well bassist Christopher Tordini and pianist Cory Smythe. Read more
