2022–23 Grad Fellows Head to Destinations Near and Far

This coming summer, the ASCI Graduate Fellows will be using their fellowship funding to travel to Europe, South America, and to several different destinations across the United States. Clara Nizard, PhD student in English and Theater and Performance Studies, will be exploring the question of how different disciplines define motion and movement. Clara will conduct her research this summer at a number of museum collections and archives in France. Michael Stablein, Jr., also doing his doctorate in English and Theater and Performance Studies, will be traveling to Big Sur, California, to film a new performance that considers the American notion of Manifest Destiny as a national “coming-of-age” that accomplishes itself at the cliffs of the west coast. Also going westward is Darlene Castro, PhD student in Music Composition. Darlene heads to the mountains and national parks surrounding Salt Lake City to explore the sonic landscape of that region of the country.

Chloe Lindeman, PhD student in Physics, will travel to the Eugene Science Center and the University of Oregon to explore new ways of making science experiential, bringing her musical training into play for her research. PhD candidate in Computer Science Soumik Ghosh heads to Cambridge University to the Center for the Study of Existential Risk where he will meet with researchers who are exploring questions related to technology and its impact on the well-being of humans. Anthropology PhD student Alice Diaz will travel to Santa Marta, Colombia, to conduct a series of workshops with school children, which will focus on artistic expression through the archaeological sciences. Savannah Gowen, PhD student in Physics, is off to France to learn the art of French pastry techniques during which she will investigate the physics of baking. And, finally, Nicolas Rueda-Sabater, PhD candidate in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies, will attend two history-oriented film festivals, one at the George Eastman Museum—The Nitrate Picture Show—and the other in Italy, the Pordenone Silent Film Festival.

We look forward to hearing about what they learn...
